So, I asked my friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.susannaives.com\/nancyregencyresearcher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nancy Mayer<\/a> if I could excerpt pages from her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.regencyresearcher.com\/pages\/med1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Regency Researcher website<\/a> and she graciously agreed.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.regencyresearcher.com\/images\/cutfoot.jpg?resize=426%2C312\" alt=\"\" width=\"426\" height=\"312\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What\u00a0would Jane Austen&#8217;s family have had in their medicine chest? What would they do when traveling?<\/p>\n<p>Savory &amp; Moore of Bond Street, London, made many mahogany medicine chests for people of the <em>ton<\/em>, outfitting\u00a0them with silver topped bottles. Some of the other contents might\u00a0be a mortar and pestle for grinding various roots and seeds, a\u00a0scale and weights for weighing ingredients, a piece of marble\u00a0on which to mix a salve, a set of measures, a dosage spoon, and\u00a0a plaster iron.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2164411\/19th-century-medicine-chest-time-capsule-1817-containing-dozens-exotic-potions-goes-sale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.regencyresearcher.com\/images\/plant2.gif?resize=90%2C250\" alt=\"\" width=\"90\" height=\"250\" align=\"left\" \/>Susanna&#8217;s Note: See images of a physician&#8217;s medicine chest<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Several medicines and medical procedures\u00a0are mentioned in the novels of Georgette Heyer, and others, which\u00a0are unfamiliar to modern day writers. Miss Heyer mentions only\u00a0those medicines and medical practices that she could discover,\u00a0from diarists, letter writers, and physicians of the day as actually\u00a0having been used.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.regencyresearcher.com\/images\/plant1.gif?resize=187%2C250\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"250\" align=\"right\" \/>Most of these, except for bloodletting and the tincture of laudanum,\u00a0were draughts, gruels, and medications that a woman could brew\u00a0up herself in a still room. Though the richer ladies left more\u00a0and more of such tasks to apothecaries and doctors, many still\u00a0prided themselves on being able to provide such remedies from\u00a0the domestic medicine chest. In many ways, the women who knew\u00a0the old secrets of the still room were better able to protect\u00a0their families than those who sought out the most popular and\u00a0prestigious doctor of the day. Culpepper&#8217;s herbal compendium couldn&#8217;t\u00a0have killed as many people as the doctors and their nostrums did.<\/p>\n<p>Those unfortunate enough to need a remedy when away from home\u00a0and their own supply, had to depend on others to provide it unless\u00a0they had their medicine chest with them.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 542px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"    \" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/c\/c3\/Deutsches_Museum_Verkehrszentrum_-_Haus-_und_Reiseapotheke_um_1800.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"407\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">German portable medicine cabinet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A housewife could whip up a bottles of saline draughts, barley-water,\u00a0lemonade, jars of calves&#8217; foot or pork jelly, as well as blisters\u00a0and plasters. The apothecary or doctor provided the laudanum,\u00a0the mercury and the calomel.<\/p>\n<p>For centuries the most popular pain-reliever was a tincture of opium in alcohol. Laudanum was prescribed for all classes of diseases and was regularly used for sleeping draughts.<\/p>\n<p>Laudanum, according to Dr. Thomas Sydenham&#8217;s formula, consisted of: 2 oz strained opium, 1 oz saffron, 1 dram cinnamon and cloves dissolved in a pint of canary wine.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 582px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/9\/90\/Tranby_house_55_gnangarra-edit.jpg\/728px-Tranby_house_55_gnangarra-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"582\" height=\"479\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Original medicine chest (portable medicine cabinet, traveling cabinet) at Tranby House, Australia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Though the addictive quality of opium was known, it was the major ingredient in most of the medicines of the day, even that given to teething children. Both de Quincy and S.T. Coleridge were addicted to opium. Despite de Quincy&#8217;s well known confession and description of his addiction, opium continued to be used. Shake well.<\/p>\n<p>Rub on teeth and gums. Rinse mouth well.
