No judgment here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, these old versions are made with raw eggs, so if you want to try these recipes, you may want to find a technique to gently heat the eggs to the minimum temperature to destroy the pathogens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Jerry Thomas in his 1862 book <em>How to Mix Drinks: Or, The Bon-vivant&#8217;s Companion, <\/em>\u201cEgg Nogg is a beverage of American origin, but it has a popularity that is cosmopolitan. At the South it is almost indispensable at Christmas time, and at the North it is a favorite at all seasons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is Thomas\u2019 basic eggnog recipe. I believe &#8220;do.&#8221; means ditto of the measure in the preceding line. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/susannaives.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/holly.jpg?resize=70%2C75\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is holly.jpg\" width=\"70\" height=\"75\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Egg Nogg<br> (Use large bar glass.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1 table-spoonful of fine sugar, dissolved with<br> 1 do. cold water, 1 egg.  <br> 1 wine-glass of Cognac brandy.&nbsp; <br> <em>\u00bd <\/em>do. Santa Cruz rum. <br> 1\/2 tumblerful of milk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fill the tumbler&nbsp;\u00bc full with shaved ice, shake the\ningredients until they are&nbsp;<em>thoroughly&nbsp;mixed&nbsp;together,&nbsp;<\/em>and\ngrate a little nutmeg on top. its file name is holly.jpg\" width=\"70\" height=\"75\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Sherry Egg Nogg<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1 table-spoonful of white sugar.<br> 1 egg.<br> 2 wine-glasses of sherry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dissolve the sugar with a little water; break the yolk of the egg in a large glass; put in one-quarter tumblerful of broken ice; fill with milk, and shake up until the egg is thoroughly mixed with the other ingredients, then grate a little nutmeg on top, and quaff the nectar cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/susannaives.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/holly.jpg?resize=70%2C75\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is holly.jpg\" width=\"70\" height=\"75\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Egg Nogg<br> (For a party of forty)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\n1 dozen eggs.<br>\n2 quarts of brandy.<br>\n1 pint of Santa Cruz rum.<br>\n2 gallons of milk.<br>\n1 1\/2 lbs. white sugar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\nSeparate the whites of the eggs from the yolks, beat them separately with an\negg-beater until the yolks are well cut up, and the whites assume a light\nfleecy appearance. Mix all the ingredients (except the whites of the eggs) in a\nlarge punch bowl, then let the whites float on top, and ornament with colored\nsugars. Have ready the whites of the eggs, beaten to a stiff froth, and beat them into the above-described mixture. When this is all done, stir in six pints of good rich milk. There is no heat used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Egg Nogg made in this manner is digestible and will not cause headache.
